What is Ensō?

Ensō is a Zen concept that has been in existence for thousands of years. The origins of this concept date back to the time of Siddhārtha Gautama, also known as Buddha (the founder of Buddhism). Monks started painting circles in India as part of a meditation process to calm the mind, body and soul in the pursuit of enlightenment. The name of this practice became known as Ensō.

Over time, this practice migrated to China where Monks started including calligraphy within the circles. As the practice traveled across China, the types of calligraphy varied due to the apprentices of their Zen Masters adding their own spin on the concept. Eventually the concept reached Japan where the open circle concept became predominant.

The open circle represents the pursuit of perfection in addition to the pursuit of enlightenment and this brand's logo is derived from this concept.

Ensō's logo represents the most important attributes one has to posses to become a master in their own art in their pursuit of perfection and enlightenment.

Ensō's logo does not touch beginning to end to demonstrate the gap in one's skill level and the goals to be achieved.
